Entrevista Exclusiva: Biff Byford (Saxon)



O grupo inglês Saxon, um dos mais importante nomes do cenário da New Wave of British Heavy Metal, estará se apresentando no próximo dia 03 de maio, em show exclusivo e único na cidade de São Paulo, promovendo seu mais recente álbum, Thunderbolt. Tive a honra de conversar com o vocalista Biff Byford, que no meio de uma agenda completamente lotada, dedicou um pouco de seu tempo para responder algumas questões sobre o novo álbum e a atual turnê. Confira abaixo o bate-papo, nas versões em português e inglês.

O Saxon está de volta ao Brasil para uma única apresentação em São Paulo. Quais as lembranças que você tem da última passagem da banda por aqui (2013), e o que os fãs podem esperar para este novo show?
Adoramos tocar no Brasil. Temos muitas lembranças de ótimos shows no passado. Maravilhosas pessoas loucas.

Com uma carreira longa, com muitos clássicos, como escolher o set list noite após noite?
Tentamos colocar tantos clássicos quanto possíveis, mas também nos concentramos em Thunderbolt. Teremos 7 novas canções em nossas apresentações como headliner.

Antes do show no Brasil, o Saxon irá fazer uma turnê europeia com Judas Priest e Black Star Riders. Como irão ser estes shows?
Somos convidados do Judas Priest nessa turnê, e em dias alternativos, estaremos tocando como atração principal.
A bela versão DELUXE de Thunderbolt

Vocês estarão em uma turnê Latino-americana, que irá passar por Brasil e México. Quais as principais semelhanças e diferenças entre o público mexicano e brasileiro?
Ambos são muito apaixonados pela música do Saxon. 

No México, o Saxon irá participar em um festival, ao lado de Deep Purple, Ozzy Osbourne, Marilyn Manson, e outros grandes nomes do rock ‘n’ roll. Aqui no Brasill, já temos o anúncio de uma noite do Rock in Rio dedicada para o Heavy Metal. Vocês gostariam de participar desse evento?
Iríamos amar tocar no Rock in Rio. Nunca estivemos lá!

Falando sobre o novo álbum, Thunderbolt, que chegou às lojas em fevereiro, três anos após Battering Ram. Como foi a gravação e quais as principais inspirações para criar o novo material?
O novo álbum entrou nas paradas ao redor do mundo, então, Thunderbolt tornou-se um álbum muito especial para nós, já que as pessoas gostaram muito dele.

Biff e Lemmy, amigos desde 1979

“They Played Rock n Roll”, uma das novas canções, é uma homenagem para Lemmy Kilminster. Para os fãs, a morte de Lemmy foi uma grande perda. Além de fãs, vocês eram amigos dele. Para uma banda tão importante como o Saxon , esta homenagem representa o que, além de gratidão e amizade?
Conheço o Motörhead desde 1979. Eles ajudaram o Saxon muito, quando da nossa primeira apresentação em público. Esta canção é sobre eles e sua música.

Conte-nos sobre as principais lembranças da estrada com o Motörhead, durante a Bomber Tour?
Foi nossa primeira turnê. Eles nos ensinaram tudo o que e como fazer.

Outra canção do novo álbum, a faixa-título, recebeu um clipe com imagens do Saxon ao vivo. Conte-nos sobre a ideia deste vídeo. Ainda, algo muito especial neste vídeo é que existem poucos celulares na audiência, que está lá para curtir a música e a banda. O que você pensa sobre muitos fãs permanecerem gravando ou tirar fotos durante o show, bem como os fãs irem até os hotéis em busca de um autógrafo ou foto com a banda?
Este vídeo é uma compilação de filmagens do Wacken, e da última turnê que o Motörhead fez na Europa. Nós achamos que é legal como nos dias de hoje cada celular se torna uma câmera. Sem problemas com isso.

Vocês também lançarão outro vídeo para esse álbum?
Já temos três vídeos no youtube "PlanetSaxon", e irão existir mais..

A atual formação do Saxon é uma das mais estáveis no rock atual. O que você acredita ser a principal causa desse estabilidade na banda?
Somos amigos, e a química entre nós é ótima.

The English band Saxon, one of the most important names in the New Wave of British Heavy Metal scene, will be performing on May 03, in an exclusive and unique show in São Paulo, promoting their latest album, Thunderbolt. I had the honor of talking to singer Biff Byford, who, in the middle of a busy schedule, took some time to answer some questions about the new album and the current tour. Check out the chat in English (above, in Portugues) versions.

Saxon is back to Brazil for an only presentation in São Paulo. What are the main memories of the last passage for here (2013), and what the fans can expect for this new show?
We love to play in Brazil we have many memories of great shows there in the past crazy wonderful people

With a long career, with many classical songs, how is to choose the set list night by night?
We try to put in as many classic songs as possible but it’s all about thunderbolt so we have 7 new songs in our headline shows.

Before the Brazil show, Saxon will be in a European Tour with Judas Priest and Black Star Riders. How will be these shows? 
We are very special guests on the Judas Priest but we are playing headline shows on day offs

You will be in a Latin American tour, with a leg passing to Brazil and Mexico. What are the main similarities and differences between Mexican and Brazilian audiences?
Both are very passionate about Saxon music

In Mexico, you will participate in a festival, together with Deep Purple, Ozzy Osbourne, Marilyn Manson, and other great rock ‘n’ roll names. Here in Brazil, we have an announcement of one night of Rock in Rio Festival dedicated to Heavy Metal. Would you like to participate in Rock in Rio?
We would love to play on rock in Rio we have never played there.

Talking about the new album, Thunderbolt, which coming at stores in February, three years after Battering Ram. How was the recording and what was the main inspirations to create new material. 
The new album has been in the charts around the world so thunderbolt has become a special album the people love it.


“They Played Rock n Roll”, one of the new songs, is a Lemmy Kilminster tribute. To fans, the Lemmy’s dead was a huge loss. Besides fans, you were Lemmy’s friends. To a band so important like Saxon, this tribute represents what, beyond gratitude and friendship.
I knew Motorhead since 1979 they helped Saxon a lot when we first appeared on the scene and this song is about them and their music.

Tell us the main memories on the road, with Motörhead, in Bomber Tour?
It was our first tour. They taught us how to do it .

Another song of the new album, the title track, has received a clip with images of Saxon caught in the act. Tell us about the idea of this video. And something very special in this video is that are so few mobiles and cell phones in the audience. It is in order to like the songs and the band. What do you think about many fans stay recording or taking pictures during the show, as well as the fans that goes to hotel looking for an autograph or picture with the band?
It’s a compilation of shots from Wacken and the last tour Motörhead did in Europe. We think it’s great that’s how it is these days every phone is a movie camera. No problems


Would you released another video clip from the album?
There are 3 videos on youtube planet Saxon, and there will be more.

The current Saxon line-up is the most lasting in the rock of these days. What do you believe which maintains this stability in the band?
We are friends and the chemistry is great.
